When your Amazon main image gets a listing suppressed: a troubleshooting order
Your listing vanished from search and Seller Central blames the main image, but it looks white to you. Here's the order we check things in, and how to find the problem with an eyedropper and a zoom.

Search suppression is frustrating in a specific way. The listing still exists and the URL still works, but it no longer appears in search results. Seller Central often gives a vague reason: the main image doesn't meet requirements.
Worse, many suppressed main images look fine. White background, clear product, no text. The problem is usually something you can't see by eye.
This is the order we troubleshoot in. The rules themselves are covered in our Amazon main image requirements guide; this piece is about diagnosis.
Step 1: confirm it's the image
Filter inventory for suppressed listings and open the details. Suppression isn't only about images: overlong titles, missing required attributes and incomplete category data cause it too. If several reasons are listed, fix the non-image ones first; they tend to clear fastest.
Once you know it's the main image, note which kind of issue it is — missing image, size, background, or prohibited content. Each points somewhere different.
Step 2: check the background with an eyedropper
This is the most common cause. The main image background must be pure white: RGB 255, 255, 255. A background that looks white can easily measure 248, 248, 250, especially with phone photos, grey studio paper or images that have been recompressed several times.

The check takes a minute:
- Open the image in Photoshop, GIMP or anything with a colour picker;
- Sample the four corners, the midpoint of each edge and a few points near the product;
- Every background sample should read 255, 255, 255.
The three usual "almost white" problems:
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Whole background slightly grey | Underexposure or white balance drift | Push the background to white with levels, without blowing out the product |
| Grey band at an edge | Backdrop didn't fill the frame, or a cutout left a border | Re-cut and fill the background with pure white |
| Halo around the product | Too much feathering on the cutout | Tighten the selection and reduce feathering |
A slight natural contact shadow under the product is usually acceptable, but large grey shadows and gradient backgrounds aren't. When in doubt, remove the shadow.
Step 3: check product fill and resolution
- Fill about 85% of the frame. Too small can be flagged, and it makes your thumbnail look empty.
- Resolution. At least 1000 pixels on the longest side enables zoom, and much smaller files may be rejected outright. We'd go straight to 1600–2000px.
- Format. JPEG, TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF are generally accepted; JPEG is the safest.
Step 4: look for anything that isn't the product
The main image may only show what's being sold. Suppressions we've traced back include:
- A tiny logo or URL watermark in a corner, very often inherited from a supplier's photo;
- Badges like "Best Seller" or "Free Shipping";
- Props or accessories not included in the box — a phone case photographed with the phone in it;
- Colour swatches;
- Visible mannequins or hangers on apparel (apparel has stricter category rules — follow those);
- Borders around the image.
Supplier photos are the usual suspect. Factory images often carry a faint watermark that disappears at thumbnail size and only shows at 100% zoom. Clean those with watermark removal, then zoom into every corner before uploading.
Step 5: variations and multiple marketplaces
For variation families, check every child ASIN's main image, not just the parent. One colour with a bad image can suppress just that variation.
If you sell in several marketplaces, don't assume an image that passed in the US will pass in Europe. Review results can differ.
How long fixes take
After a new main image is uploaded, the storefront can take anywhere from a few minutes to a day to update, occasionally longer. If a listing is still suppressed after 48 hours, check:
- Whether you uploaded the corrected file (identical file names make this easy to get wrong);
- Whether another suppression reason is still active;
- Caching — view the listing in a private window or on another device.
A pre-upload checklist
Rather than diagnosing after the fact, make these checks routine:
- Eight background samples, all 255, 255, 255;
- Product fills about 85%, with even margins;
- Longest side at least 1600px;
- All four corners checked at 100% for watermarks, text or logos;
- Only items that are actually sold appear in the frame;
- Shrunk to 200px wide, the product still reads clearly.
If you're converting a batch of real photos into compliant main images, AI cutout with white output fills the background with #FFFFFF directly. Still spot-check against the list above, particularly for transparent materials and products with fine edges.
